Hey guys!

Heading out for my phallo consult tomorrow, we have to be in the airport in the AM and we are flying out in the afternoon. My consult is not until the 15th, so we will have a day or two to sight see/be touristy types.

So I figured it may benefit someone, so I decided to post how my phalloplasty consult went with Dr. Crane. Feel free to ask me questions.

Letters required: I only need one letter, but I have already changed my name, birth certificate, drivers license and have been living full time for around six years, so an exception was made.

Flap decision: Radial Forearm Flap. I have had laser done on it twice already and will need it two more times before my surgery. Laser is recommended over electrolysis by Dr. Crane as well. This flap was decided on based on my build. Which made me happy as since I will not have a graft taken from my leg, I will be able to get up and move without as much of an impediment as I would have if they had taken it off my leg. He showed me about the size of what they would remove on my left forearm. I did discuss with him that IVs in my hand do not work well, but I will mention it again prior to surgery, so that I can have it placed where I'd like it. I don't think he operates on many medical people, because that surprised him. But he got along with my older brother, I swear, they are like long lost relatives, they are very similar and hit it off. My older brother, who is a Doctor as well, is very impressed with him.

Procedure: I will be having a Phalloplasty, Urethral Lengthening, Vaginectomy, Glansplasty and Scrotoplasty. I will come back for Testicular Implants around a year after surgery. I will not be having the erectile implant put in as I do not top and it is just an added risk for me. The little guy as some call it will be implanted into the base of the new phallus. In order to have this done this way, you must have already had a hysto, I had mine last year. I will be under General Anesthesia, between 8-10 hours for the procedure, which is a bit nerve wracking for me.

After care: We didn't get too much into this, but I did have some concerns regarding DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis) and Blood Clots. I will be the ICU around 2 days, and in the hospital for a total of 5. They will get me up and walking two days post-op. My other concern is the catheter, as I hate them, but they said the removal is not too bad. My other is concern is the fact that I come out rough from under General Anesthesia, so I let Dr. Crane know so that the anesthesiologist is aware of it and it can be dealt with at the appropriate time.

Miscellaneous Stuff: Now that I have my date, I am organizing getting a place to stay for the month I will be there. Now, it is not necessary you have someone stay with you the full time you will be there. You can stay in town between 2-4 weeks, I decided to stay for four, but I will have someone with me the full time, as a precaution and makes me feel better.

Cost: I was quoted 75,000 for it.

Out of work: I will be out of work for two months, as my job is moderately physically active.

Nice write up, I went to Dr. Crane for ALT phallo. I used insurance so not sure as to what the self pay price was pm the procedure. I do know RFF is a bit cheaper than ALT and MLD. But I did notice something you said that I find highly interesting and never heard crane say to anyone so I'm wondering if it was patient specific. You stated " Laser is recommended over electrolysis by Dr. Crane as well", it's interesting to say the least as when you get the pre op package there is diagrams for electrolysis hair removal. As well my insurance only covers electrolysis per Cranes specific recommendation for long lasting hair removal. Speaking as a post op guy who has several post op buddies year out with all donor sites electrolysis is a the better option. All my buddies who did later have since got back for electrolysis. I spoke heavily with mine during my 24 hours of hair removal pre op, realistically we should be starting hair removal at least a year before surgery but no none tells us this. And realistically even then you still may have slight hair growth. Lile as of now I have sought hair growth on my shaft. The hair is totally thinner and lighter then what it could have been and I can tell 2 more clearings (3-6 sessions of 2 hours or more) more sessions will remove the remaining hair but it's to the point if I never did it and just nailed it no one but me would even know. But I'm lazy so moral is its got a go so I don't have to even think about it later lol.

I wish you much luck with surgery and also feel free to join the Brownstein&Crane Surgical Yahoo Group. I posted the link in the resources section.
