Hi,

I am working towards getting a phalloplasty and thought I heard that Dr. Brassard was good - but now I can't seem to find anyone that has used his clinic.

Anyone have any input on your experience there?

Thanks much!

Hey I don't have experience with Dr. Brassard but I do with Dr. Crane, If I was going to give you the best advise of your life id tell you to look into and run to Dr. Crane. I have been his patient for about 2 1/2 years. He did my chest and just recently did my RF Phallo, he is the best. He has a ton of pictures on his website, he does 1 stage procedures that offter a completed penis. glans, vaginesctomy, nerve hook up, urethra leghtening.... and then 9 months later you have a small surgery to implant the rods and testicle implants. The hospital stay for me was really good because Dr. Crane had educated the nurses so well. Dopplers were used every hour for the first couple of days to make sure everything with the penis was going well. And his office works very well with insurance, as mine was fully covered. He does have a longer wait list than most of the other surgeons but thats because so many people want his work done on them. Check out his website man, you wont regret it. Im about 4 weeks post op and I couldnt be happier with my penis, scrotum and how well he takes care of his patients.

Dr. Brassard has many years experience with RFF phalloplasty. Dr. Belanger is his partner in these surgeries. GRS Montreal is often used by Canadians, but they've done lots of surgeries on non-Canadians as well. (The clinic has been well-known internationally for many years now.)

One of the reasons they have a lower profile is that they 1) don't advertise--they don't need to; 2) they don't publish photos online--you have to get a consult or find photos posted by patients.

Dr. Brassard requires an in-person consult to book surgery. If you are not too far away, it might be a good idea to book your consult. This is a very big surgery and shopping around for the right surgeon is recommended.

Fantastic to hear that you had such a great experience with Dr. Crane!

I say this as someone who would like to have surgery with Dr. Crane: there is no "best" when it comes to surgeon. Dr. Crane does procedures offered by several surgeons (some with more experience and training) and has happy patients and unhappy patients, and patients with and without complications, just like other surgeons. Dr. Crane is a very skilled surgeon but promoting any surgeon as "the best" is a disservice to other trans guys.

I do not think that saying Dr. Crane is the Best is a disservice to anyone, and that would never be my intention. I can only speak from my personal experiences which produces my opinion. Thats what this forum is all about, its about expressing my opinion and experiences with the Surgeon than I went to. I would expect all that are considering lower surgery to do a ton of research like I did, so stating that I think Dr. Crane is overall the best should only lead a pre-op guy to look into him. Dr. Crane does do procedures offered by other surgeons, but his caring attitude, willingness to alter the procedure to your specific desires/needs, and his attention to patient satisfaction is why I believe he is above the rest. His result, low complications rates and abilities speak for themselves. I feel that in the world of surgeons and us, trans men looking for bottom surgery I want to aid in anyway that I can, having now being post op.

I appreciate you sharing your experience with Dr. Crane, absolutely, but maintain that there is no "best" surgeon and that perpetuating this is problematic. You didn't have this surgery with another surgeon so it's not possible to rank surgeons in this manner. And unlike many surgeons, Dr. Crane has never published academic studies so his complication rate is not known (and many complications--including those experienced by Dr. Crane patients--are under-reported.)

Please don't get me wrong: It is fantastic that you had such a good experience and it's helpful to hear for those considering phalloplasty. Indeed, Dr. Crane may have been "the best" choice for you. And again, I hope to have surgery with Dr. Crane myself. The problem that I have with asserting that any surgeon is "the best" is that this tends to have a silencing/non-validating effect on the people who did not have a good experience with that surgeon (and there are patients of Dr. Crane who feel that way), and this paints an unbalanced picture. I believe that opinions are quite meaningless (but anecdotal experiences are helpful) and it's important for guys to know that there are options and that their choices in this very personal journey, even if they are "against the grain," are entirely valid. I have no doubt that you had no intentions of silencing or obfuscating options, but that is the subtle and damaging effect of "best" claims, as I have witnessed over many years. I hope that you can understand this perspective for what it is. (And I hope to have a positive experience with this surgery as you have.)

As this thread was a request for information about Dr. Brassard, I encourage you to open a new thread to share about your experience with Dr. Crane. I'm sure many would be interested.

Thank you! This is so good to hear. I had wondered why they had a low profile if they were so good!

Picking a top surgeon was so much easier for me! Big Grin
