Dr. Gerhard S. ("Sol") Mundinger, MD, MBA, is a board-certified plastic surgeon whose practice is exclusively focused on gender-affirming surgery. Dr. Mundinger founded the NOLA Transgender Institute in 2018 to increase access to surgical care for transgender and non-binary people in New Orleans and the Gulf South. In 2021, he joined the Crane Center for Transgender Surgery in Austin, TX, where he offers FTM Top Surgery.
Types of Top Surgery
Double Incision Top Surgery
Two horizontal incisions are made at the top and bottom of the pectoral muscle and the breast tissue is removed. Nipples are removed, re-sized and grafted back on to the chest. (Nipples are optional.) Double Incision is ideal for those who are medium to large chested.
Keyhole Top Surgery
Breast tissue is removed via a small incision that's made along the bottom of the areola. The areola isn't re-sized or re-positioned. The nipple can be re-sized. Because of the small incision, scarring is very minimal. The nipple stalk is left intact so sensation is retained. Keyhole is only suited to those who are small chested.
Surgeries are performed at Arise Austin Medical Center and Westlake Hills Surgery Center, both in Austin.
Surgery Requirements
Dr. Mundinger is a member of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health and follows the WPATH Standards of Care Guidelines for Top Surgery. One referral letter is required, unless otherwise specified by your insurance. Additionally, patients must be 18+ years of age.
Insurance
Dr. Mundinger is in-network with Cigna PPO, Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO, Commercial United Healthcare PPO and Employer Health Network (Whole Foods). He has also had success billing as an out-of-network provider with Aetna, Group Health, Harvard Pilgrim, HealthPartners and Medica. He also accepts credit/debit cards, cashier's check, money order, wire transfer and medical financing via CareCredit.
Dr. Mundinger does not work with the following insurance providers: Medicare, Medicaid, Tri-Care, Kaiser, Ambetter and Oscar Health.
Booking a Consultation
Dr. Mundinger is available for phone or in-person consultations in Austin. The wait time for a consultation is 4-6 weeks. If insurance is out-of-network, then the cost of the consultation is $200. If in-network, the consultation fee is the specialist co-pay. A surgery date can be booked after your consultation usually within 5-6 weeks.
