I'm turning 17 this year and my parents agreed to help me get top surgery this year. I've been researching and it turns out that my insurance won't cover the surgery. I would need to apply for a secondary insurance to get the surgery covered, but I have no idea how any of this works and everything I've searched has not helped. I live in the USA and I have military insurance. Does anyone have any tips for finding a good secondary insurance that will cover the surgery?

Hey Dean, great question!

Are you active duty? I've heard of people in the military getting TriCare coverage for gender surgery and being active duty was a key factor.

Since you're under 26, you might be able to get on one of your parents' policies. (I don't know how being enlisted impacts this.) Have you tried this yet?

Problem is... the period to enroll for health insurance for 2023 has closed. I don't think your parents could add you to their policy or that you could buy a secondary policy until enrollment opens again next year.

Out2Enroll is a great resource for finding insurance that covers gender surgeries. You can find more info including a link to their state-by-state guides here:
