Dr. Praful Ramineni, MD is a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon who has more than 15 years of experience and performs upwards of 600 surgeries a year. Based in Washington D.C, Dr. Ramineni's practice is focused on providing the highest quality of gender-affirming care for transgender and non-binary patients. He's highly experienced and skilled at performing FTM Top Surgery as well as Body and Facial Masculinization surgeries.
After 10 years of working in academic medicine at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, Dr. Ramineni went into private practice to provide a more personalized, one-on-one experience for his patients. Training and Experience
- Completed a very competitive six-year combined undergraduate/medical school program right out of high school.
- Top 5% at medical school and top 1% in the U.S. in medical licensing exams.
- Completed the integrated general/plastic surgery training program at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
- Became one of the busiest plastic surgeons at Medstar Washington Hospital Center, where he performed reconstructive surgery, microsurgery and aesthetic surgery.
- Served as the Chief of the Division of Plastic Surgery at MedStar, teaching more than 100 plastic surgery residents.
Top Surgery in DC
Dr. Ramineni performs all of the popular methods of FTM Top Surgery:
- Double Incision, with or without nipple grafts - The most commonly performed Top Surgery method, suited to those with medium to large sized chests.
- Peri-Areolar and Keyhole - These are nipple-sparing methods that are ideal for those with smaller sized chests and good skin elasticity. Nipple-sparing methods typically retain more nipple and areola sensation.
- Inverted-T and Buttonhole are similar to Double Incision except that they are nipple-sparing procedures, but unlike Peri-areolar or Keyhole, the nipple-areola complex is repositioned.
Dr. Ramineni performs Top Surgeries at Glen Echo Surgery Center in Chevy Chase, Maryland. After surgery, you'll be monitored by nurses until you're ready to safely leave the facility and go to where you'll be recovering. You'll need to make arrangements to have someone drive you there and stay with you for a minimum of 24 hours. It's important for you to stay close to Dr. Ramineni's office for the first week after surgery so if you're coming from out-of-town, be sure to ask about discounted hotel rates at your consultation.
Consultations with Dr. Ramineni
Dr. Ramineni offers FREE in-person, phone and virtual consultations. The consultation is your opportunity to ask Dr. Ramineni any questions you might have and view before-and-after photos from his previous patients. Together, you'll decide on a treatment plan. This includes not just choosing a Top Surgery method, but also discussing the finer points of your preferences such as scar shape and placement, nipple and areola size and placement and more.
The wait time for a consultation is two weeks. Surgery dates are booked out 2-4 months after a consultation.
Costs and Insurance
A cost estimate will also be provided to you at the end of your consultation and you'll have the chance to discuss financing options such as CareCredit, and also get assistance with insurance coverage. Dr. Ramineni is currently accepting insurance from Aetna, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Blue Cross Federal, Cigna and United Health Care. He does not accept Medicaid or Medicare.
Eligibility for Surgery
- General good health
- Smoking cessation for a period of time before and after surgery
- No BMI requirement
- No letter requirement for those who are age 18+, unless you're using insurance, in which case a support letter from a mental health provider will need to be submitted for insurance coverage.
