Hello,

I'll be getting my FTM double mastectomy with free nipple grafts very soon.

My main worries are related to not wanting to be exposed to folks more than I have to. That is much more disturbing to me than physical pain and blood.

Thanks for helping with these questions:

1) Will they have to use a urinary catheter?

2) What are some tips for bathing, going to the bathroom and dressing, so I can do as much as possible on my own?

Thanks!
J

I totally understand your concerns. It is very rare to be catheterized for Top Surgery. I've only heard of this happening when there are other procedures also being done at the same time, lengthening the surgery time.

I had a different procedure, peri-areolar, but I did not require any assistance for bathing or going to the bathroom. I think I did require some help getting my oversized button-up shirt on and off. 5 days post-op, I was walking 5km/day.

I hope this helps! Good luck! One week from now you will be POST-OP!!!

Okay to be anxious about your top surgery. You might find yourself just sponge bathing vs standing in shower the first few days and raising your arms above a certain height might also be something you avoid the first few days.
You'll want to be moving (walking) from boredom if nothing else after a couple of days.
I am one year from the initial double mast and now four months since the revision. Feel great and look great...so happy..as you will be too.

Thank you very much for your help! I didn't end up needing a urinary catheter. I have needing a lot of help with bathing, but have a supportive family member.

I don't know where to ask my question ( I couldn't start a new topic ) and that's why I am posting it here, quoting your reply. I have been searching about the keyhole Mastectomy procedure and found a thread ( http://www.ftmsurgery.net/forums/t-keyho...-dr-mclean ) where you have given a link to a site which provides Keyhole Mastectomy Service. I have small breasts which are not over hanging and I think this would be the right choice for me. In the page you have specified ( http://www.ftmtopsurgery.ca/ftm-procedur...-incision/ ) , it has been said that the procedure has a high risk of bleeding. I am a little scared! So can you please share more info regarding this?
